Keith Secola: Native Americana-A Coup Stick

2006 ABORIGINAL PEOPLES CHOICE MUSIC AWARDS WINNER

Back to Music

NATIVE AMERICANA merges roots music with a native soul, weaving folk, rock and world beat with poignant and occasionally witty lyrics. It will lift your spirits then take you on a fun and wild journey through the music of Keith Secola, as he sings an ode to the javelinas of the southwest and recalls the rolling of the Canadian National to the north. The songs also move your spirit, with a ballad to a time that's gone past with Old Trader, the first single release, and the beautiful Going Home, honoring those who have gone and those who must now carry on. Includes the longtime concert favorite, Drum in the Car, and a new arrangement of This Land, the Woody Guthrie classic.

NATIVE AMERICANA Song Lyrics:

1. OLD TRADER (Secola)

This old trader, this old post
       This old way of life
in the land we love the most
These old dreams, yesterday's gone by
Different way of life, different way to try...

(Chorus)
Time's fading fast
Chevrons of the setting sun
Only memories remain
All these memories remain...

These old dreams
Yesterday's gone by
Different way of life, different way to try...
Time's fading fast
Chevrons of the setting sun
Only memories remain
All these memories remain...

(Chorus)

2. SEA OF CORTEZ (Secola)

By the Sea of Cortez
Eva sells her effigies
Dolphins dancing backwards
Treasures for the eyes to see,
She knows what she wants to be
She wants to be like her girl, Marie
Living free out by the sea
Dancing in the summer sun

Won't be long
Summer's come

Eva's child grew up to be
Everything she'd dream she'd be
Living free out by the sea
Dancing in the summer sun,
Everywhere and everyone
Sing a song the work is done
Everywhere and everyone
Eva's child had a son

Won't be long
Summer's gone

3. KOKOPELLI BLUES (Secola/Vickers)

Seem's like there's a lot of
cheap imitations out there
Every cool dude has a different mood
Each time you turn the musical page
Another new face becomes the rage
But me I only sing the blues
Slide down a jazz swing and play my flute
Every day another new gimmick
  Impersonators tryin' to mimic

Avoid the work, just wanna cruz
  Everyone wants to win,
and no one wants to lose
This sack of seeds I'm trying to lose
Kokopelli haz the bluz

An esoteric factory went up the other day
Using my symbol as their image,
depicting a new age
Intellectual copyright
means nothing to these cats
  People like to take
but they don't like to give back
Out on the garden terrace I water my beans
Somewhere far away selling on the market
  Some watered-down beans
impersonated as the real thing
  Never had the pleasure
of hearin' the real cat sing

There's a time to pay your dues,
to sing the blues
Come to a place to play your flute
If you can't be someone else,
you must be yourself

Everyone wants to engage the mother earth
       Waiting for a miraculous birth
A Fry Bread Messiah, Quinn the Inuit
Where's the Father's Son
when you want to quit?
Out there on the high road I play my notes
Out there on the mesa I sow my oats
It's not really that I wanted it that way
The canyon lands are the playgrounds I play

Avoid the work, just wanna cruz
    Everyone wants to win,
and no one wants to lose
This sack of seeds I'm trying to lose
Kokopelli haz the bluz

4. DRUM IN THE CAR (Secola)

(Chorus)
Got my Drum in the car
(That's what they all say)
My Drums not far
(That's what they all say)

I used to be a nice boy
Used to study medicine
Held a high paying job
Had a steady girlfriend
Pillar of society
Thirty years sobriety
Five star cabana boy
Four sport letterman
Three time loser
Two time charmer
  One hit wonder
  Oh, what a nice boy

Got my Drum in the car
(That's what they all say)
My Drums not far
(That's what they all say)
I used to be a nice boy

(Drumming)

Check is in the mail
(That's what they all say)
I sent it yesterday
(That's what they all say)
I love you for always
(That's what they all say)
Marry me and all this will be yours
(That's what they all say)

I used to be a nice boy
Used to study medicine
Held a high paying job
Had a steady girlfriend
Pillar of society
Thirty years sobriety
Five star cabana boy
Four sport letterman
Three time loser
Two time charmer
  One hit wonder
  Oh, what a nice boy

(Chorus)

  Irreversible damage done...
We're gonna be rock stars
(you/we already are)

 5.  WILD JAVELINAS (Secola/Vickers)

(Chorus)
      Wild Javelinas, Wild Javeline

In the valley of the Harquahala
       Creatures so rarely seen
       We came upon a Chuckwalla
Who sang praises to the Javeline
       Petroglyphs out on the bajada
       Treasures of stories told
       A love song so sublime
      Wild Javeline

(Chorus)

They drank the water of the Hassayampa
From the river of deceit
Sweet scent of creosote
The beans of the Mesquite
Flowers of the Chuparosa
The fruits of the Saguaro
Velvet Ants and Gila Monsters danced
To the Wild Javelines

  Wild Javelinas, Wild Javeline
They sang praises to the Javeline
Wild Javelinas

6. BARNSWALLOW (Secola)

Barn swallow, my little Barn swallow
Roll over let the maid make your bed

Barn swallow, my little Barn swallow

You always have your curtains drawn
You never ever let me down

Sticking mud in the cracks of a building
Making a home for you and your children
       To be Free
       To fly, fly away

Flying bird, my little flying bird
You got a pair of angel wings
You know the songs that everybody sings

7. LOVE, FROM VEGAS (Secola/Severino)

I sent a postcard, Love, from Vegas
I went around the world looking for exotic girls
To take a picture with a guy like me

I went to ancient Rome, antiquated blue sky
  I met a Roman Goddess,
turned out to be a guy aye aye aye
(
To take a picture with a guy like me)

(Chorus)

I've been around, the world
Around the world

I went to Egypt, a mummified sarcophagi
I took a tram back in time,
searching for King Solomon's mine

I went to Venice, met a girl Magnolia
Amore in gondola, we fell in the canal of love

(Chorus)
I've been around, the world
(I sent a postcard)
Around the world
(Love, from Vegas)

I went to New York City
I danced with Lady Liberty

I met a Coney Island doll
I spoke Dakota with Lou Reed and Andy Warhol

  I went to Camelot
I went to Paris, France

 I've been around
  (Take me around)
Around the world
I sent a postcard
Love, from Vegas

8. CANADIAN NATIONAL (Secola)

Canadian National roll me far on down the line
Well my feelings are bad, I won't be feeling sad
Won't be long till it is summertime

Canadian National I can hear your whistle blow
Whistle blowing right on time
Come and ease my troubled mind

Won't be long till it is summertime
  Roll

(Repeat first two verses in reverse order)

Canadian National when I was a little child

Canadian National when I was just a child
Well my mom and my dad
Went and rolled me down the track

Won't be long till I'll be coming back
Won't be long till I'll be coming back
Won't be long till it is summertime
Canadian National you are on my mind
Won't be long till I'll be coming back

 9. SOS (Same Ole Song) (Secola)

All day long, same ol' song
I feel like I'm bustin outta here
Cause all day long, same ol' song
Over and Over, over and over

       Then we change a chord
       To fit our needs
And then we put our nightshirts on
       Another song, same ol' song
       Over and Over

I know it's out of season to be a reindeer
In the summertime, in the summertime
I know without no reason, to be certain
       That it's so, that's it's so

If they can't see where you come from
They can't see where you go
       If they can't see
       How can they know?

All day long, same ol' song
I feel like I'm bustin outta here

Life will pass you by, if you can't smile
       Life will pass you by
If you're cryin' all the while

Plant a little seed, Sing a little song
Do a little dance, Dance a little Jig

Life will pass you by, if you're cryin' all the while
       Life will pass you by

 11. HUMMINGBIRD  (Secola)

I am a hummingbird, I buzz all day
   Suck pretty flowers, pollinate away
That nectar it tastes so sweet
  Woodpecker's call it my beak
Life of a hummingbird can pass you by
If you only smell the flowers on a sunny sky

I go Mmmm....Mama
Mmmm....Honey
Mmmm...Tastes so sweet
Mmmm....Sugar
Life of a hummingbird can pass you by
If you only smell the flowers on a sunny sky

I pedal petal juice
Looking for a spot
Spot a cantina
The dancing is hot
There's bees making honey
Bears stealing honey from the trees
Life of a hummingbird can pass you by
If you can't smell the flowers on a cloudy sky

I go Mmmm....Mama
Mmmm....Honey
Mmmm....Tastes so sweet
Mmmm....Sugar
Life of a hummingbird can fade away
If you can't smell the flowers on a rainy day

Mmmm....Mama
Mmmm....Honey
Mmmm....Tastes so sweet
Mmmm....Sugar
Life of a hummingbird is full of strife
But I take the job just to please my wife
Life of a hummingbird can pass you by
If you only smell the flowers on a sunny sky

 13. NDN KRZ '49 (Secola)
(Indian Cars, '49 Reprise)

I've been driving in my Indian Car
Hear the pound of the wheel
drumming in my brain
My dash is dusty, my plates are expired
Please Mr. Officer, let me explain
I got to make it to this Pow Wow tonight
I'll be singing 49, down by the riverside
Looking for a sugar, riding in my Indian Car

My car is dented, the radiator steams
One headlight don't work, the radio can scream
I got a sticker says "Indian Power"
I stuck it on my bumper
It's what holds my car together
We're on a circuit of an Indian dream
We don't get old, we just get younger
When we're flying down the highway
Riding in our Indian Car

 14. GOING HOME (Secola)

Hear the drum
Beating slow
They are going
Going Home

   She was just
     One month old
    Her eyes were open
To the world

  See the sun
  Sinking low
  They are going
  Going Home

15. SILENT TRACK

16. WILD JAVELINAS...RETURN (Secola/Vickers)

Wild Javelinas
You don't want to meet us
When we drink tequilas

We'll max out all your credit cards
Steal your identity

    Drink tequilas from your bar
Borrow your wife's car keys

Wild Javelinas,
People want to eat us, People want to be us
We're not Dingo's, Boars, or Hyenas
We're Collared Peccaries

Yet people see us as nothing more
Than a pack of wild pigs

(Guitars interlude)

Wild Javelinas
 That's how people see us
We don't want to see them
Our motto is don't tread on me
But I may tread on you

Freedom is a word to say
Another word to do

  Wild Javelinas
They cross the Hassayampa
They cannot tell the truth

 A wise man's a fool
Wild Javelinas
