Keith Secola: Life Is Grand

LIFE IS GRAND

Back to Music

LIFE IS GRAND is Keith Secola’s highly anticipated sixth album. The seventeen track album features an all new Punk version of the cult classic NDN Kars and is a mash up of the generations with Secola’s son Keith on drums, his son’s friend Joey Dougherty on guitar and vocals, and his long time band member James Vickers on bass. Other tracks include: "Say Your Name" a song seasoned with the haunting sound of the Native flute and dedicated to the survivors of Indian Residential/Boarding School. The hard-hitting cultural and historical commentary "Open the Door"—a live show fan-favourite, and "King by Now" a melody that oozes raw with longing. A member of the Native Music Hall of Fame, Secola has been dubbed as the Native versions of both Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen, and is known in many circles as one of North America’s most eclectic musicians. He delivers yet again with a new level of artistic mastery, balancing heavy electric rock chords (Underground Overdose) with meticulously woven acoustic dreams (International Dateline and Humbelina). Life is Grand picks up where songs like Kokopeli Blues and Old Trader left off on his previous album Native Americana, with a mature element of reflection (World’s Strongest Man and Nowhere Fast) and a determined vein of rejuvenation (4 Those to Come and Little Bird). As a special treat for hard core Secola fans, the album also includes a few sample tracks from his upcoming and long awaited rock opera Seeds. Built on a solid foundation of the straight up good stuff that makes Rock classic, illuminated by a traditional Native American perspective, and full of innovative and surprising tricks and turns, Life is Grand offers listeners a diverse auditory experience at the hands of a true American grassroots treasure.

     Vocals/Instruments-K.Secola

     Drums-Mike Dupont

Say Your Name

Say your name

Show your faith

Leave no trace

Of your shame

Tears come falling

500 years

Prayers of our Children

Late at night

Down the hall

Monster’s scream

Roam and crawl

Don’t tell no one

You’ll get bad dreams

Prayer of our Children

Say their name

Show their faces

Leave no traces

of their games

Tears stop falling

500 years

Prayers’ of our Children

Prayers’ of our Children

Take these tears

2. 4 THOSE TO COME (3:59)

      Vocals/Instruments-K.Secola

4 Those 2 Come

4 those 2 come

Save them some

For the children living and the ones unborn

Give them shelter, keep them safe and warm

Hope and dream and happiness

the world we leave them is a gift

Catch a ride upon a star

Find out who you really are

You think you're real shinny cool

You’ll let you down to play the fool

Time to reinvent your self

Have to overcome yourself

Learn to live and love again

Find love lose yourself

4 those 2 come

Save them some

Stop and take a look around

Recognize what you’re going through

Don’t have nothing people just like you

Times are hard life is cruel

Angels sing, but angels mourn

Children grow then they're gone

Travel far and never far from home

A falling star on their own

For the children living and the ones unborn

Give them shelter, keep them safe from harm

Hope and dream and happiness

The world we leave them is a gift

Life is Grand

The sky is blue

The grass is green

Purple mountains

I need something to complain about

My feet hurt

My hands ache

My hearts broke

Give me something to complain about

Why you don’t love me anymore

Why you don’t want me anymore

Why you don’t need me anymore

Life is good

Life is grand

Life is all that is should be

I need something to complain about

Overdue underpaid without you

I need something to complain about

Why you don’t love me anymore

Why you don’t want me anymore

Why you don’t need me anymore

Love me anymore

Want me anymore

Need me anymore

I need something to complain about

Give me something to complain about

Life is good

Life is grand

       Vocals/Guitars/Tambura/Harmonium-K.Secola

       Bass-Jimmy Vickers

       Drums- Robert Scott

       Vocals-Jeff Merkel

Underground Overdose

Your suicide wish

Did not come true

Do unto others

They do unto you

You say you

Don’t have to rhyme

You say you

Don’t have to stand in line

Want to give in

With out surrendering

What makes you want to think

That I’d get a kick on you?

What makes you want to think

That I’d play a trick on you?

It’s another underground overdose

Coming through for you

Underground overdose

Coming true for you

Peace of mind

Is something you say

Takes some time

Heaven is something

That you make

Hell is something

Everyday you take

What makes you want to think

That I’d get a kick on you?

What makes you want to think

That I’d play a trick on you?

It’s another underground overdose

Coming through for you

Underground overdose

Coming true for you

NDN Kars

I been driving in my NDN KAR

Hear the pound of the wheels drumming in my brain

My dash is dusty, the plates are expired

Please Mr. officer let me explain

Got to make it to a pow wow tonight,

I’ll be singing 49 down by the riverside

Looking for a sugar

Riding in my NDN KAR

T-bird in the glove box, ain’t got no spare

Feather from an Eagle, ain’t got no care

The road is empty in my bottle of desire

Daylight is breaking, sun touches fire

Got to make it to a skate jam tonight

I’ll be singing 49 down by the riverside

Looking for a sugar

Riding in my NDN KAR

My car is dented, the radiator streams

One headlight don’t work, the radio can scream

I got a sticker, says NDN Power

I stuck it on my bumper

That’s what holds my Kar together

We're on the circuit of an Indian dream

We don't get old,we just get younger

When we're flying down the highway

Riding in our NDN Kars

      Vocals/Guitar-K.Secola

      Vocals-Jeff Merkel

      Guitar, Bass-Jimmy Vickers

      Drums-Robert Scott

      Piano-Tom Dare

What they got away with

See the writing on the wall

All for some and none for all

See them slither see them crawl

They write the words upon the wall

When you stop and think

What they got away with

Make you stop and say

Why let them get away

It was written on the wall

All for some and none for all

Hear the rumble hear the call

Words they tumble from the wall

When you stop and think

What they got away with

Make you stop and say

Why let them get away

There is enough for everyone

Abundance under the sun

First step to show you care

Recognize you brother’s need

Need step is to plant a seed

Generously cast off greed

Love and hope

Make you believe

Feed and shelter

Human need

There’s enough

Abundance under the sun

When you stop and think

What they got away with

Make you stop and say

Why let them get away

9. NOWHERE FAST (3:43)

       Vocals/Keyboards/Guitars-K.Secola

       Bass-Jimmy Vickers

       Vocals-Jimmy Severino,Jeff Merkel

Nowhere Fast

I want 2 B near U

U R me

I am U

U R the light I C

We came on the road

A couple sick Joes’

We’re going nowhere fast

There  ain't nowhere  to go

Drinking tonics on the plane

Cut off over Maine

Would you like that in day or night

Black or white or just plain

It’s all illusion confusing U

Wanna lose yourself

Find the truth within you

I want 2 B near U

U R me

I am U

U R the light I C

We came on the road

The road was never plowed

Spun out for while, turn around

Came out proud

Sipping tonics on the plane

Cut off over Spain

Would you like the captain

To arrest you the moment

you step off the plane?

10. KING BY NOW (3:53)

        Vocals/Guitar-K.Secola

        Vocals-Jeff Merkel

        Harmonica- Hans Olson

King by now

If I could be King by now

I could have so many things

I could have a queen by now,

If only I were King

I’m not down or cloudy,

Blue or melancholy

Hopelessly tragically romantic,

Hyperly melodramatic,

I Love you

If I could be King by now

I could have so many things,

The stars, the moon,

Your heart some how,

If only I were King

I’m not down about it,

Blue or melancholy

Hopelessly tragically romantic,

Hyperly melodramatic,

I Love you

I Love you

There ain’t no doubt

When I look into your eyes

The only doubt I see’s

A reflection

Of me

11. INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE (2:21)

         Vocal/Guitar-K.Secola

International Dateline

When I watch the sun go down and daytime fade away

Then I slip into the crack between the night and day

All around the world traveling through no time

Daytime isn’t night time

Nighttime isn't day

Sun gleams, moon beams

Jet streams, wet dreams

Visions I can keep

Pipe Dreams, reverie

Stargazed fantasy

Happen when I sleep

Lazy little boy

Plays in the sun all day

Sleeps until the afternoon

Dreaming his life away

Yesterdays past is gone

but still is present in today,

Tomorrows future can be found

The way we live today

All around the world

Travelling through no time

Daytime isn’t nighttime

Nighttime isn’t day

12. BEST THING (3:06)

        Vocals/Guitars/Piano-K.Secola

        Bass- Jimmy Vickers

        Drums-Curtis Rogers

        Harmonica- Hans Olson

Best Thing

You’re the best thing

That’s ever happened to me

I‘m the worst thing

That’s ever happened to you

These regrets I’ve had a few

But none of them

Because of you

Who am I?

And what am I?

Without you I'm nothing

You’re something without me

I’ll be somebody if somebody

Gives their love to me

The way I see it’s got to be

All of you or none of me

That will never be still I would die for you

I’m nothing without you

I’m lost without you

Without your love

I am nothing

13. LITTLE BIRD (2:35)

        Vocals/Guitar/Organ-K.Secola

        Vocals-Jeff Merkel

        Bass-Jimmy Vickers

        Drums-Robert Scott

Little Bird

Little Bird you must fly

You must try to love

You must fly

Live your dream

Sing your songs

 You must try to love

You must fly

Hear the words

Hear the melody calling you

Hope and love and harmony

We want to hear you sing your songs

14. WORLD'S STRONGEST MAN (3:21)

         Vocal/Guitar-K.Secola

         Accordion-Johnny Pouchnik

World’s Strongest Man

I said F U to the worlds’ strongest man

I flew around the world holding on to the cap of superman

Had a smoke with Buddha in his garden

Now I must part my friends without tears

How can you sail a ship without the wind?

How can you oar a boat without the oars?

How can you question without wondering?

How can you part friends without tears?

I can sail a ship without the wind

Can oar a boat without the oars

Can question without wondering

But I can’t part my friends without tears

15. HUMBELINA (2:43)

       Acoustic/Slide Guitars/Vocals-K.Secola

       Vocals-Jeff Merkel

Humbelina

Beautifully

U dance upon the earth

Pray for those who hurt

Laugh until you cry

U R to me

The essence of this life

Kindness of a heart

The hope within a dream

I would travel far

To reach a fallen star

And bring it back to you

U R to me

Everything that’s good

Doing what you should

Saying what you mean

I’d like to see

The coming of your heart

Land across the sea

A home for you and me

Beautifully

You walk upon the earth

Sing for those who hurt

Laugh until you cry

I’m so amazed

You seemed to be unfazed

This life has left you none

Life without a crumb

16. YOU ARE THE LIGHT (4:17)

        Vocals/Instruments-K.Secola

        Vocals/Harmonium-Jeff Merkel

        One Tone-Matt Meyers

You are the Light

Om mani padme hum

You are the light

The awakening dream

A ribbon from the stars

You are the light

The awakening dream

A vision from the sky

You are the light

The awakening dream

Across time

A vision from the sky

Across time and worlds a message

You are the light

The awakening dream

A ribbon from the stars

Across time and the world

Darkness fades on the ancient path,

Take refuge,

Breathe the light

Mind, speech, body

Who am I?

A vision from the sky

A ribbon from the stars

You are the light

The awakening dream

A ribbon from the star

A vision from the sky

Under the river moon

Self awakened ones

Illuminate disillusionment

Destroy desolation

Dance with a kind heart

A shadow clings to form

Everything is miraculous

Love is who you are

Be the light

Or be the mirror

Migrations of the soul

17. COME TO ME (3:18)

        Vocals/Instruments-K.Secola

Come to me

Why do I feel?

The way that I feel

Coming from you

Coming to me

Won’t U come 2 me

Why do I dream?

Dream that I do

Visions I see

Visions of you

Won’t U come 2 me

Your Love

Is real

It’s real

Your Love

How do I keep?

A promise to you

Songs that I hear

Visions I see

Won’t U come 2 me

Won’t U come 2 me
